Water-wise Landscapes and Xeriscape Conversions

Utah is the 2nd driest state, with an average annual precipitation of only 13 inches. Much of that is in winter, when our plants can't use it. A Kentucky Bluegrass lawn needs about an inch of water per week (more like an inch and a half in the heat of summer), yet in the summer it rains less than an inch per month.

Approximately 2/3 of the water used annually by a typical Utah home is put on the landscape. This is way too high. Utahns need to be water-wise.

Water-wise landscaping doesn't have to mean cactus and gravel. We at High Desert Gardeners understand how plants use water and how to irrigate them efficiently. We can create irrigation zones which group plants with similar water needs. We offer plants that adapt well or are native to our dry climate. We create beautiful xeric landscapes and can convert your existing property into a water-wise showpiece.

Many municipalities offer incentives for homeowners and businesses to convert their water-guzzling landscapes to ones that only sip. Many encourage homeowners to "rip their strips," which is to replace the grass in their parking strips with more eco-friendly designs. We can help.

After the initial investment, a waterwise landscape can save the average Utah homeowner substantial amounts per year in water charges.
